Tuesday's Tip
Mixed-use
development planned on site of defunct Gold Club
The Gold Club, once a famous hot spot for rowdy
conventioneers and millionaire sports stars, may end up being a nest for
everyday homebodies.
A joint venture of Midtown developer Kim King and Gwinnett
developer Wayne Mason has signed a contract to buy the storied former
adult club with plans to build a condo tower.
King, who developed Mid City Lofts on Spring Street, intends
to put several condominiums and on-street retail shops on the lot, Mason
said. They expect to close on the deal by Dec.
1.
King did not return calls seeking
comment.
An Augusta family and the U.S. government each have a 50
percent interest in the 1.5-acre tract near the Lindbergh MARTA station
and BellSouth's Buckhead offices. Both parties agreed to put the site on
the market in July.
Federal authorities closed the club in 2001 after its former
owner, Steve Kaplan, pleaded guilty to carrying on a racketeering
enterprise.
Another adult club, a park and a police precinct were all
touted for the plot after the Gold Club's demise. The U.S. government and
other interests weighed in on what should end up
there.
But former Atlanta mayor and Buckhead booster Sam Massell
said he was pleased with the King and Mason plan.
"We had preferred a park and made efforts in that
direction," said Massell, president of the Buckhead Coalition, a group
promoting the district. "As long as they manage traffic and don't disrupt
the neighborhoods, it's a healthy improvement for that
area."
