The Georgia Club, a tony community of
University of Georgia alumni, is one of several subdivisions
springing up across the country that give college buddies an opportunity
to move in next door to one another.
The clubhouse and golf course at the 1,200-acre
Georgia Club are up and running. Construction of the homes has not yet
begun. Plans call for 800 homes by the time the club is completed in 2011.
Residents will be offered lectures, trips to sporting events and the
spirit of their alma mater.
While fanatical tailgaters and season ticket
holders are prime targets for the developments, organizers are working on
other draws, including lectures, golf courses, fitness facilities and
alumni association events.
Similar communities have been built or are in the
works at universities known for their sports and their boosterism,
including Georgia Tech, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisville, Penn State, Kansas
State, Texas A&M and South Carolina.
